Yume Nikki

While waiting for my delivery of doujin games from the glorious land of Nippon arrived, I decided to try playing the infamous doujin game made by Kikiyama called Yume Nikki (Dream Diary). It’s a simple adventure game made using Rpg Maker 2003 program. You play as Madotsuki, a hikikomori girl whose world is just her bedroom. But once you go to bed you will enter a whole new world. Your mission is to explore this dream world, collect the effects that can change your form, see the bizarre inhabitants of the dream world, and waste your time enjoying all the nonsense that happens. There’s no clue or dialogue telling you what your objective is so you’re free to explore the dream world to your heart delight. Keep in mind that the dream is HUGE! You can easily get lost but fortunately most of the maps in Yume Nikki loop by itself so you can find the exit if you just keep on walking. Anyway, there’s no real enemy in this game except some annoying stuffs that might trap you and forcing you to wake up.

Welcome to the dream world! Please select your destination!

If there’s an objective in this game then it’s about collecting effects. By using effect, you can give Madotsuki a bike or knife or other stuffs that might aid your journey.  Some are also able to transform Madotsuki into strange stuffs like poo head, blob, or severed head. Some effects just… do nothing. But if you focus your game solely on collecting effects then you’ll miss what this game is all about. The theme of this game is ‘exploring the dream world’ and that’s how you should enjoy Yume Nikki.

Just another adventure in the dream world.

Just another adventure in the dream world.

I remember how my friend used to warn me that this game is strange. All I expected was something like “Alice in Wonderland” strange but when I played it my first impression was this is what the term WTF looks like if it’s put into video game form. I don’t know what Kikiyama smoked while making this game but it was really some serious stuffs. Many people say this game is a combination of Mother/Earthbound and Silent Hill. This game might not be for everyone. If you’re looking for action this game is not for you. If you’re looking for good story this game is not for you. If you’re looking for fun gameplay this game is not for you. If you’re looking for a normal game this game definitely is not for you. However if you feel quite bored and want to spend your time tilting your head sideways while saying WTF then this game is definitely for you.

WTF...

WTF...

No... Just no...

No... Just no...
